Chapter 13
Tully
I hate leaving her. I fucking hate it. I feel as if I leave her with no protection, even though I know weâve armed guards at every fucking doorway.
I speak to the guard, one of our youngest recruits, as I exit the building. They earn rank by obeying the men of the Clan and keeping us safe, their only job vigilance and surveillance.
I get the attention of one of the nearby guards. âNo one comes in or out of that door.â
His eyes widen, and he nods, his hand already on a weapon.
I text Tiernan and Lachlan
Outside dining hall. Landscapers present without Malachyâs permission. Foul play.
Lachlan responds right away.
On my way.
Tiernan, however, doesnât respond.
I see Lachlan up ahead, his large frame dwarfing the exit to the dining hall and send him a quick text to tell him where I am. A moment later, heâs joined me on the side of the school, his hands shoved in his pockets to make him appear nonchalant. Anyone who knows him would recognize the tension in his shoulders and the laser focus of his eyes. Heâs anything but nonchalant.
The truck opens, and two men in uniforms exit. One has a lawnmower, the other a seeder, and for a moment, they look harmless.
âMan on the rightâs packing a semi,â Lachlan says under his breath so only I hear him. âMan on the leftâs got explosives in there.â
Fucking brilliant catch.
Weâve no choice but to attack.
âFucking hell, Tiernan hasnât responded. We need the bloody protection of the Clan,â Lach mutters.
âWe can handle these two.â Iâve handled more than this singlehandedly. âIâll interrogate. The goal is to incapacitate and bring them back for interrogation.â
âAye.â
I step out of the bushes into broad daylight, and one of the men looks up.
âHello,â he says with a smile. For some reason, he looks vaguely familiar, but I canât place him.
âWhatâs the story? Doing work for the school, then?â The friendly banter will only last seconds. I look up to see Tiernan and Faidha exit the dining hall. He looks at me in surprise. He hasnât seen the text.
âWho sent you here?â I ask, my question meant to sound benign, but laced with meaning. The man with the seeder smiles.
âMalachy, of course.â
âIs that right?â Lachlan asks. His hands come out of his pockets. âThen why does he say he didnât?â
They pull their weapons, but theyâre slower than we are. In half a second, Lachâs got his gun at the temple of the one closest to him, and Iâve got the second.
âWho are you?â
âTully, watch out!â Tiernan shouts, when someone else flies out of the truck beside us and attacks. I drop to the ground, bringing him with me, roll, hear the explosion of a gunshot. He takes off.
I wrestle him to the ground, pivot, and shoot the second assailant in the kneecap. He howls, gripping his knee, and screams with pain.
âTiernan, secure the students!â I yell to him. Lachlanâs got the other man in a headlock, but he still holds his weapon in his hand.
